Company History

Toronto Port Lands Company (TPLC) is the operating name for the City of Toronto Economic Development Corporation created in 1986.

Formerly operating as TEDCO, the Corporation’s mandate and activities expanded significantly from a landowner to a strategic investor and development partner. In addition to managing industrial properties in the port lands, TEDCO also began managing commercial and residential lands across the City.

In 2008, Toronto City Council passed a collaborative report titled A New Model To Enhance Toronto’s Competitiveness with recommendations for the City and its economic development and real estate activities. The report recommended the amendment of the City of Toronto Economic Development Corporation’s existing mandate and subsequently created Build Toronto, as the City’s real estate and development corporation and Invest Toronto, Toronto’s business, sales and Marketing Corporation.

In early 2009, the Corporation’s role was revised as the port lands property management and leasing company. A new Board of Directors was appointed and management was directed to rebrand the Corporation under TPLC to better reflect its revised mandate. In December 2009, Toronto Port Lands Company officially became the new operating name for the City of Toronto Economic Development Corporation.
