Environmental Management

Formally endorsed by the City of Toronto and the Provincial Ministry of Environment, TPLC collects the environmental information, monitors soil and groundwater conditions, and provides historical information for site remediation projects. The Area Wide Initiative (AWI) program strives to remove informational asymmetries and facilitate effective brownfield redevelopment, thus providing an effective environmental management model for other jurisdictions in North America.

AWI involves collecting soil and ground water information over time to understand existing environmental conditions. This information will be used when decisions are being made to manage individual sites or to restore sites for redevelopment. Studies conducted at individual sites can also be used to supplement the AWI information base. In this way, the AWI will help identify the types of environmental investigations needed at individual sites, and eliminate needless duplication.
